The History of Writing and the Book

$250.00

Product Description

Storytelling is one of the oldest cultural manifestations of humankind. From before the dawn of recorded history, people--unable to write--relieved their souls by means of the spoken word, aided by gesture and song. Medicine men and storytellers were chosen for their personalities and wondrous gifts of memory.  Actually, the first jingles, hymns and chants were invented to assist their memories in relating the epics of their tribes, or for instruction in mystic rituals. The pater familias (father of families) would pass on to his son, by word of mouth (lore), his memories of history, and, especially, migration traditions. This course will introduce you to the transition from oral to written traditions--a fascinating evolution. You’ll even have the opportunity to learn how to write like an Egyptian!
