1 Corinthians 14:34-35: “Women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but should be subordinate. But if they want to learn anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is improper for a woman to speak in the church.” In an earlier passage of the same letter, Paul assumes that women do both pray and prophesy in the Corinthian community (11:5). The social world of the Mediterranean in the first century had a long and complex history, in which Israel had not been the only great civilization. The societies of that time (Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Canaanites, etc.) were, for the most part, patriarchal, relegating women to an inferior and subordinate position. So, will the real Paul please stand up?
