Franz Kafka: Mimesis of The Metamorphosis

Product Description

Explore a Masterpiece of European Magical Realism

In The Metamorphosis, the protagonist goes to bed a man, and wakes up a grotesque insect!

This work is subject to many readings -- psychological and political interpretations surface as most prominent.

Students in this module explore this literary transformation, and create a piece of poetry or fiction involving the metamorphosis of a key character.

Metamorphosis Is Not New

The history of myths and fairy tales abounds with magical transformations.  They can be positive or negative.  Kafka's work surprises us because it offers such a realistic, magically real transformation of a man.  We literally believe that the protagonist has become a huge insect.

What lessons, can we, as writers, learn from the paradoxical layers of this work?
